Malcolm X is perhaps the most amazing black hero of the 20th century. Like many black heroes that fought against the persecution and hate of racism during the 1900s, when he was young he was convicted of several crimes and sent to prison. While there, however, he persecuted and met Elijah Muhammed, a man who immediately hecame his mentor and helped set Brother Malcolm on the journey of becoming a brilliant and multi-faceted scholar and leader. It is said that Malcolm was self-educated and became so by means of a heavy reading habit that began during his sentence. Once he was ready, Brother Malcolm exhibited his newfound scholarship through inspirational public speaking not just at home, but also all over Europe and throughout Africa. He was even asked by officials of several nations there to serve in their governments. Despite a lot of intensely critical propaganda that cast him as gangster-like or hateful, many colleagues, followers and fans have said historic and deeply touching things about him. These feelings, on the part of those that remember him best, serve as conclusive proof that, far more than his intelligence, effectiveness, or oratory, it was his kindness and compassion, as well as his depth, religion, and inspired spirit that made him strong. For example, Malcolm wanted to enlist the help of the United Nations, to gather together as many peoples as possible under his cause. Also, having experienced on a pilgrimage first hand the principles of Islam that dictate the acceptance of any race and anyone as members of its temples, Malcolm believed that this tradition could serve as one of the biggest influences in unifying people all over the world. He founded temples and organized Islamic activist groups.
